Income and Poverty in Brazos County, Texas

When compared to other counties (or parishes) across the United States, Brazos County, Texas can be recognized as having a very high poverty rate amongst the population, with a poverty rate of 26.9 percent of people living in a family with an income below the poverty level in 1999. The Black or African American race/ethnicity demographic group, represents the largest rate of poverty with 38.5 percent of the 2000 residents living in poverty. Brazos County, Texas is made up of a very highly-educated population of the working age, with 37 percent of the over 25 years old population having a Bachelors Degree or Higher, according to the 2000 Decennial Census. Brazos has a higher percent of individuals with higher educations than the State of Texas's proportion of 23.2 percent and a higher percent than the national average of 24.4 percent.

According to the 2000 Decennial Census in Brazos County, Texas, a high proportion of the male population in the area have reached the Bachelors Degree or Higher category, with 41.6 percent receiving this level of education. The women in Brazos have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors Degree or Higher) than the male population-- 41.6 percent (Men) versus 32.6 percent (Women). Demographic Profile for Brazos County, Texas

The U.S. Census Bureau, in the year 2005, estimated a median age in Brazos County, Texas to be 24.4 years of age. The median in Brazos is less than the median in Texas of 33.2. Since the year 2000, the area has witnessed an increase in the median age, when it was 23.6 years old. With 21.1 percent of the 2005 population being comprised of individuals under the age of 18, Brazos can be understood as having a medium-low proportion of youths. The 18 to 64 years old population group has a relatively high presence of the population, with 71.4 percent of the population makes up this age category. The retirement (65 and over) age group comprises 7.5 percent of the population.
