The Hospitals industry witnessed the largest drop in employment, losing a total of 21287 jobs during the time period. The jobs lost in Hospitals makes up 2.6% percent of the employment lost during the period in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Top Declining Industries: 1. Hospitals (21287 jobs lost) 2. Food and beverage stores (20619 jobs lost) 3. Social assistance (13271 jobs lost) 4. Clothing and clothing accessories stores (9985 jobs lost) 5. Insurance carriers and related activities (9687 jobs lost) In Middlesex County, Massachusetts, the total number of jobs in all industries in the county has decreased by 1.6%, or 13,062 jobs, from 2001 to 2006. The Professional and technical services industry has added the most employment with 98,670 total jobs brought in during the period. The growth in Professional and technical services makes up 7.7% percent of the total industry employment growth in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Top Growing Industries: 1. Professional and technical services (98,670 new jobs) 2. Educational services (45,078 new jobs) 3. Food services and drinking places (44,673 new jobs) 4. Administrative and support services (42,930 new jobs) 5. Ambulatory health care services (28,869 new jobs) Given the 284 industries (3-digit NAICS) with sufficient data reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in each year, 18 had stable employment, 115 showed an escalation in the number employed, and 151 industries reported a drop in employment.
