Higher Education in the Winchester, VA-WV Metro Area

Winchester, VA-WV Metro Area is made up of a moderately-educated population of the working age, with 20.6 percent of the over 25 years old population having a Bachelors Degree or Higher, according to the 2005 American Community Survey. The Winchester MSA is reported having a lower percent of population with high education level than the State of Virginia's proportion of 33.2 percent and a lower percent than the average across the nation of 27.2 percent.

From the year 2000, the Winchester metro area has decreased in the total percent of the over 25 population having a Bachelors Degree or Higher. This population group has declined by 5.4 percent to a total of 20.6 percent in 2005, according to the American Community Survey. The 2005 proportion of highly educated population is less than the State of Virginia percent of 33.2 and less than the United States percent of 27.2.

From 2000 to 2005, the percent of the male population that can be considered highly educated has decreased by 8.2 percent. In the year 2005, 19.8 percent of area's male population, over the age 25, achieved a Bachelors Degree or Higher. At the same time, the percent of women, over the age 25, holding at least a Bachelors Degree has decreased by a total of 3.0 percent. By the year 2005, a total of 21.4 percent of the female population having received at least a Bachelors Degree.

The American Community Survey reported that in the Winchester, VA-WV Metro Area, a high proportion of the male population in the area have reached the High School Diploma category, with 37.2 percent receiving this level of education. The women in the Winchester metro area have achieved a greater level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men -- 19.8 percent (Men) versus 21.4 percent (Women). The most common level of education for women in the area is High School Diploma category, with 36 percent of the areas female population attaining this level of education.

Demographic Profile for Winchester, VA-WV

By measuring total land area, the Winchester metro area encompasses a total area of 1056 total square miles. The area has a medium-low average population density of 86 persons per square mile. Other metro areas with similar densities in the US include: -- more densely populated -- Bellingham (87 per sq. mile ), Texarkana (89 per sq. mile ), College Station-Bryan (90 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Albuquerque (86 per sq. mile ), Longview (85 per sq. mile ), Houma-Bayou Cane-Thibodaux (85 per sq. mile ).
