Income and Poverty in Wise County, Virginia

Evaluated with other counties (or parishes) across the nation, Wise County, Virginia can be recognized as having a relatively high rate of poverty among the people, accounting a rate of 20.0 percent of the population with family incomes below the 1999 poverty level. Estimated since the year 2000, a low number of individuals have migrated to Wise from outside the country. The immigration into Wise totals 0 percent of all immigration into Virginia. In Wise County, Mining, Retail Trade, and the Accommodation and food services industries are the largest employment industries. The Mining provides the most jobs and contributes 19.6 percent of all jobs throughout the county, totaling 2,046 employees.
