Income and Poverty in Island County, Washington

The poverty rate in Island County, Washington has increased by 0.9 percent since the 2000 rates, moving from 7 percent to 7.9 percent.

Island County, Washington had a population that was estimated at 79,252 in 2005. The total population has increased sharply, since the 2000 total population of 71,876. This growth signifies an increase of 10.3 percent. Island ranks 13 of 39 counties when calculating total change in population for Washington and the county ranks 395 of 3,141 counties in terms of population growth in the United States.

In terms of total land area, Island encompasses a total area of 208 square miles. The county has a medium-high average area density of 380 persons per square mile, in 2005. Other US counties with similar densities include: -- more densely populated -- Dane, WI (381 per sq. mile ), Nueces, TX (383 per sq. mile ), Washington, RI (386 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Catawba, NC (379 per sq. mile ), Boulder, CO (378 per sq. mile ), Porter, IN (377 per sq. mile ).

Island County, Washington has a population base that is comprised of 86.6 percent White, 1.8 percent African American, 3.9 percent Asian, and 3.7 percent Hispanic.
